Reel & Artist Statement

Director / Cinematographer Reel from Lucas Parente on Vimeo.

As what I consider an “Artist”, I try to see and capture beauty in everything that I can. Our eyes easily can find it in something grand, so I look for it in the small details. Also, this same beauty is not complete if is not meaningful to the major piece. I gather information from my memories, the style of those who inspire me and try to put it at my service, at the service of a major project. In the end it seems that is all about feeling—which it is mostly, but I'm aware of the limitations between my mind and the world around me so that's why each new work is a potential way for me to learn and make the link of these two stronger.

  1. You had some really good looking shots in your reel, a lot of really nice close ups and it shows off how you frame your subjects.

  3. These are some really great shots. I liked how a lot of the shots used different camera movements and focus changes. This shows your versatility with using a camera!

  5. Lucas I love this reel!!! The shots were beautiful... You have such and eye for film that I've seen and admired all semester! Also, you used your song and the footage so artistically. I loved the blackouts and how they fit with the music... Even though the shots were completely unrelated, I felt like I was watching a music video and I loved it. Awesome job!

  6. AMAZING. Very beautiful work, it looked like a professional's. One of my favorite shots was the focus change on the field of flowers. The wrack focus was so well done and perfectly used that I hardly noticed it. My eyes naturally fell to where the focus pointed them. Well done!

  7. Great reel! You have a lot of very different material. The song worked really well. I think you should use more shots from Ryan's scene assignment (Apocalypse Now). There were some really strong ones in there that you shot. Great job Lucas!

  8. Loved it. There were a couple of shots that were mostly black that I might remove, but every single shot, plus the cuts to black, flowed so smoothly. It was all beautiful. Great music, too.

  9. Awesome reel! I loved how you made the first few clips to cut along to the beats of the music. It flowed together really nicely. The transitions from one camera movement to the next was done well.

  12. Lucas,

I would totally hire you based off that reel!! It was very beautiful and really showed your talent! I must say my favorite part was probably your use of colors. You seemed to have a strong eye for that, because I felt like each shot had a distinct color pallet and mood. Great work!!

  14. Absolutely love your artist statement, wow. And I could see that shine through in your video. Some shots I think were a little stronger than others. Loved the ones from the final scene you did in the studio and that super short depth of field one with the flowers. The one of Kate was a little underexposed, I think. I like the way you separated some with a black out, really gave emphasis to each individual shot's emotion. Great job, Lucas. I'm excited to see what you make in the future. You truly inspire me as a filmmaker and person. Keep up the good work! :)
